InfantCarry™

When I saw my daughters struggling to carry their infant carrier/car-seats over their forearms, I saw the need for a device that would help distribute the weight.  Most infant carriers have a narrow handle where the 20-30 lbs of car-seat and baby is concentrated. There are wrap-around cushions for the handle, but that does nothing to distribute the weight over a wider portion of the forearm.  Many people hold the carrier at their sides, which is awkward and bounces the carrier and baby off their leg. Some use both hands to hold the carrier waist high, but that ties up a hand that may be needed for another child or other items.

I developed the device we call InfantCarry™, from sections of PVC pipes, padding, clamping mechanisms and a safety strap.  InfantCarry™ clamps to the handle and distributes the weight over a longer portion of the forearm and shields the crook of the arm. A production InfantCarry would be lighter with a less bulky clamp so that it would be simple to attach and remove, and compatible with all carrier types. Although this design is strictly functional, I envision a manufacturer able to implement gender attractive covers to add some “cuteness” and the ability to color coordinate the product, if desired.

InfantCarry™ was used by my daughters through two grandchildren with feedback incorporated in follow-on models.  They were frequently asked by other mothers where they could acquire one, so I am confident there is both a need and a market for such a product.  We have another grandchild due next month followed by twins in the fall, so I will be back in my garage working on new models … unless of course we find a company to produce it.
